UK’s New Prime Minister Must Ensure Sustainability Of Fashion Industry

The UK fashion sector is calling upon the UK’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to support the fashion industry.

Ethical Fashion Group Chair Harold Tillman CBE, previously Chairman of the British Fashion Council said: 

“When he was mayor of London Boris Johnson was a supporter of the British Fashion Council and through it the British fashion sector. Now we look forward to his support in ensuring the strong SME fashion sector in this country can tackle the pressing issues of climate change and pollution.”

The Ethical Fashion Group, which runs the global industry platform Common Objective, was disappointed in the government’s rejection of all the recommendations in the Environmental Audit Committee’s report Fixing Fashion Clothing Consumption and Sustainability under the previous leadership. CO urges the new leadership under Johnson and Chancellor Sajid Javid to reconsider and demonstrate that an “enterprising, outward-looking and truly global Britain” is one in which British fashion business lead the way in showing that successful business is sustainable business. 

Other leaders of the UK’s fashion industry have called upon the new Prime Minister to ensure the financial sustainability of the sector.

Speaking to Drapers British Footwear Association CEO, Lucy Reece-Raybould, said: ”Our message is clear [we] are relying on [Johnson] to get the right deal to protect over £1.7 bn in footwear exports alone.”
